Women & Girls

Here at the Traveller Movement we are passionate about promoting the rights of Women and Girls, and do this through two main projects. The Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse Project is a partnership initiative with Solace Women’s Aid (SWA) which has included a Domestic Violence Advocacy Course and theatre project.  The Women’s Empowerment Network is made up of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Women who have created a peer support group and have fed into policy through various avenues including the Women and Equalities Committee.   Some of our members attended and presented at the 7th International Roma and Traveller Women’s Conference in Finland. New networks and links were made with Roma and Traveller women from around the world and we can’t wait to capitalise on those connections.

We wrote a section about Gypsy and Traveller girls in the new Plan International ‘The State of Girls Rights in The UK’ report. Based on our research, Plan has added the following to their list of recommendations: 1) All public data sets must be updated to use the upcoming 2021 census ethnicity classifications which include Gypsy/Traveller and Roma under white categories. 2) There should be targeted focus on Gypsy and Traveller girls who have some of the poorest human rights outcomes. 3) The government must re-introduce ring-fenced funding for services for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller girls.
